Mold Remediation Basics

What is mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the safe cleanup of mold and the moisture problem behind it. It includes containing the area, removing materials that cannot be saved, cleaning the surfaces that can be saved, and drying the space. Read more on our mold remediation page.

Is mold remediation the same as cleaning mold?

Not quite. Cleaning wipes a surface. Remediation is the full professional job. It means controlling the spread, removing damaged materials, cleaning, and dealing with the moisture so the mold is less likely to return.

Why does mold grow in Bradenton homes?

Mold needs moisture, a food source such as drywall or wood, and time. Bradenton has warm weather, high humidity, heavy summer rain, and storms. Air conditioning drains, roof leaks, and plumbing leaks add moisture to that mix.

How fast can mold grow after water damage?

Fast. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that if wet materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill, in most cases mold will not grow. After that window, the risk goes up. See the EPA guide, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home.

How do I know if I have mold?

Common signs are a musty smell, dark or fuzzy spots, peeling paint, bubbling drywall, and stains that come back. Some mold hides inside walls, above ceilings, or under floors. A smell with no visible spot can still mean hidden moisture.

Is every dark spot on a wall mold?

No. Dirt, soot, smoke, and old water stains can look like mold. You cannot tell by color alone. If the spot is damp, smells musty, or keeps coming back, treat it as possible mold and have it checked.

The Process and Timing

What happens during a mold remediation visit?

We look at the damage and measure moisture. We explain what we found and give you a free estimate. After you approve, we seal the work area, run HEPA air filtration, remove damaged materials, clean the surfaces, and dry the space. We finish with a clean-up and a walk-through.

How long does mold remediation take?

Many small jobs take one to three days. Larger jobs, or jobs with rebuilding, can take longer. The size of the area, the materials involved, and how wet the space is all matter. We give you a time estimate before work starts.

Do I need to leave my home during remediation?

Not always. For a small job in one room, many people stay in the house. For a larger job, or if someone is sensitive to dust or odors, you may prefer to stay elsewhere. We talk about this with you before we begin.

Why do you seal off the work area?

Cleaning mold can release spores into the air. Plastic barriers and HEPA air filtration help keep them in the work area and out of clean rooms. This is a normal part of safe mold remediation.

Will the mold come back?

It can if the moisture stays. Mold returns when a leak, a wet crawl space, or high humidity is not fixed. We find the likely source and tell you what to repair. We cannot promise it will never return if the cause is not corrected.

What should I do while I wait for the visit?

  • Stop the water if you can safely do it
  • Run the air conditioner and fans to dry the room
  • Keep people and pets out of the affected area
  • Do not scrub, sand, or spray the mold
  • Take photos of the damage

If you suspect the air conditioning system is contaminated with mold, the EPA advises against running it. Call us and ask first.

Florida Rules and Local Conditions

Do I need a licensed company for mold remediation in Florida?

Florida regulates mold-related services under Chapter 468, Part XVI of the Florida Statutes. Florida law has an exemption for small areas of about 10 square feet or less. For larger jobs, hire a licensed professional. MoldCare Bradenton holds Florida License No. 743091. You can ask us for details and check any contractor on the state's license lookup at the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Can the same company test for mold and remove it in Florida?

Generally, no. Florida keeps mold assessment and mold remediation separate on the same property. The state limits one company from doing both within a set period, with some exceptions for certain contractors. That is why MoldCare Bradenton does not offer mold testing. We can point you to the right kind of professional.

Do I need a mold test before remediation?

Not always. If you can see mold or a moisture problem, you can often start with an estimate. Some people want a written assessment or lab results, especially for a sale, a dispute, or an insurance claim. In that case, hire an independent licensed mold assessor.

Does hurricane season change what I should do?

Yes. After a storm, wet materials can grow mold quickly. Dry the home as soon as it is safe, and call a professional if materials stayed wet. Our mold remediation after water damage page explains the steps.

What humidity level should I keep indoors?

The EPA suggests keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. In Bradenton, air conditioning and a dehumidifier can help. A cheap humidity meter shows you the number.

Cost, Estimates, and Insurance

How much does mold remediation cost in Bradenton?

The price depends on the size of the area, the materials, how hard the area is to reach, and whether rebuilding is needed. A small bathroom job costs less than mold across an attic. We do not guess over the phone. We give you a free written estimate after we see the problem.

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. We look at the problem, explain it, and give you a clear price. You do not pay for the estimate. Work starts only after you approve.

Does homeowners insurance cover mold remediation in Florida?

It depends on your policy. Many policies cover mold only when it follows a covered event, and some limit the amount. Read your policy and ask your insurer. We can provide photos and written documentation of the work for your claim. We cannot promise a claim will be approved.

What documents help with an insurance claim?

Photos of the damage, a written scope of work, an invoice, and notes on the moisture source are useful. Keep records of the date the water damage began and any repairs you made. We provide documentation for the work we do.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. We provide a written workmanship warranty. The terms are given in writing before work begins, so you know exactly what is covered.

Specific Situations

Is black mold more dangerous than other mold?

Color does not tell you how risky a mold is. Many molds look dark. The safer approach is to treat any mold growth the same way: stop the moisture, avoid disturbing it, and have it cleaned up properly. See our black mold remediation page.

Can I clean mold with bleach?

The EPA does not recommend using bleach or a biocide as a routine practice during mold cleanup. Bleach also cannot fix hidden moisture or soak into porous materials like drywall. Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners, because toxic fumes can result.

Can I remove small mold spots myself?

For a very small area, many people clean it themselves. The EPA says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, in most cases you can handle the job yourself. Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask. Call a professional if the area is larger, keeps returning, or you cannot find the cause.

Can wet drywall, carpet, or insulation be saved?

Sometimes, if it is dried quickly and has no mold. Once mold grows on porous materials like drywall, carpet pad, and insulation, they usually need to be removed. We tell you what we plan to remove and why.

Is mold in an air conditioning system part of your service?

We clean mold on building materials and surfaces. We do not repair or replace air conditioners. If you think mold is inside your system, call an air conditioning contractor and tell us what they find. We can handle the affected building materials.

Is it safe to stay in my home with mold?

We are not medical professionals and cannot give medical advice. If anyone has health symptoms, talk to a doctor. Keep people away from the affected area and reduce moisture while you arrange a cleanup.

Do you handle mold after a flood or roof leak?

Yes. We handle the mold that follows. We do not repair roofs or plumbing, so you will need a roofer or plumber for the repair. We can tell you what to ask them.

Rentals, Buying a Home, and Businesses

Who pays for mold in a rental home?

It depends on your lease, the cause of the mold, and Florida landlord and tenant law. This is not legal advice. Tell your landlord in writing, keep photos, and read your lease. We can document the problem and the work.

What if I find mold when buying a house?

Ask the seller to disclose what they know, and ask your inspector about moisture. For a clear record, hire an independent licensed mold assessor. Then ask us for a free estimate to clean up what is found.

Do you work in businesses and apartment buildings?

Yes. We work in offices, shops, restaurants, schools, apartment buildings, and rentals. Our commercial mold remediation page explains how we plan the work around your hours.
